Telephone Interview Transcription

Telephone interviews come in all shapes and sizes, from conference calls, Skype or online interviews, customer service calls, job interviews, telephone research interviews, journalistic telephone interviews and even celebrity telephone interviews. Here at Transcription City we are experts when it comes to transcribing your phone calls. So with that in mind, we thought we’d give you our top tips on recording your telephone interviews for transcription.
Test your Phone Line Connection! Before you start recording your call, it is definitely worth checking that your phone line is clear and that all outgoing and incoming calls are audible. Telephone interviews with snap, crackle and pop do not make for good listening or interview transcripts and low quality audio files can end up costing you extra in transcription costs.
Schedule a Time that is Convenient for you and your Interviewee! Interruptions during an interview can ruin the flow of the conversation, compromise the quality of your recording and annoy the other person on the phone. Be sure to choose an interview time when you and your interviewee have the time to speech without breaks.
Avoid Background Noise! You may think that you have chosen a nice quiet place to conduct your interviews, but it is important that you are aware of any background noise that might affect the quality of your recording. This includes, outside traffic noises, pets such as dogs or birds – goldfish are usually quiet, but keep an eye on them! Children if you are interviewing at home or work colleagues if you are interviewing in the workplace.
Plan Your Interview Questions! Even if you decide not to use set questions for your telephone interviews, it is definitely worth planning a set of interview questions to use as a guide if the conversation starts to wander off topic or if your mind goes blank. It also helps you to get the information you want to obtain from your interviewee.
Let your Interviewee Speak! It is important to remember why you are conducting your telephone interview – to get information from your interviewee! So be sure to encourage your interviewee to do most of the talking during your allotted interview time and don’t hog the conversation! It is also important not to speak over your interviewee, as this often means that the dialogue is lost when listening back to the audio.
